4D <br />• <br />4 <br />i <br />SECTION 2C - BACKFILL AND COMPACTION <br />SCOPE <br />A. The Contractor shall furnish all of the material, equipment, plant, labor, <br />transportation and supero ision necessary so as to complete the Work as <br />shown on the flans and specified herein. <br />2. GENERAL <br />A. Where structures or unsuitable material have been removed Suitable <br />backfill or tit] material shall be provided, placed and compacted to <br />elevate the site to the finish grade as shown on the grading plans. Pre -fill <br />compaction shall be accomplished prior to this operation„ as specified <br />herein. <br />3. MATERIAL <br />A. General 'Fill - All hurnus, peat, spongy material. roots, stumps, muck. <br />paving materials, and other objectionable materials shall be unsuitable for <br />backfill. Suitable material for backfill shall consist of sandy -loam, clayey- <br />sand, sand, gravel, soft shale, or crushed stone. The Engineer shall be the <br />sole judge of what constitutes suitable and unsuitable material for backfill <br />other than those materials listed above. <br />B. Select Fill - Shall consist of uniform, clean, free draining sand, containing <br />less than 4% fines passing a No. 200 sieve. Laboratory test results of this; <br />fill shall be submitted to the Engineer for lois approval. <br />C. Filter Material - Shall consist of a washed sand containing less than 2%. <br />finers passing a No. 200 sieve and must have a uniformity coefficient of 1.5 <br />or greater but not more than 4.0. Effective grain size shall he between 0.20 <br />and 0.55 millimeters diameter. <br />4. BORROW <br />A. If there is not Sufficient excavated material of a suitable duality tr. <br />complete the work, the Contractor shall provide and deliver the.. necessary <br />suitable additional material to the job site. <br />UNSUITABLE MATERIAL REPLACEML'•N,r <br />A.
