Proclamation <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 12 THROUGH 18, 2024 <br />AS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />'Whereas, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office <br />and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br />Whereas, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May <br />15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police <br />Week; and <br />Whereas, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in <br />the United States every 54 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, more than 26,000 <br />U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />Whereas, over the past decade (2013-2023) the average annual number of officer fatalities <br />has been 163. In 2023, 136 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty; additionally, 25 canines <br />died in the line of duty; and <br />'Whereas, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and remembers <br />those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives <br />to protect and serve. <br />Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of <br />Indian River County, Florida, that May 12 — 18, 2024 is recognized as National Police Week <br />in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community and communities across the <br />nation, and May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and <br />their families, and U.S. flags should be flown at Half -Staff. <br />Adopted this 7th day of May, 2024.
