RECOGNIZING MAY 11TH THROUGH THE 17TH AS NATIONAL POLICE <br />WEEK <br />'Whereas, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the <br />United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office and Indian Rivpr <br />County municipal police departments; and <br />F <br />-Whereas, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as <br />National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week; and <br />-whereas, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United <br />States every 54 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, more than 26,000 U.S. Law <br />Enforcement Officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />-Whereas, over the past decade (2014-2024), the average annual number of officer fatalities has been <br />163. In 2024, 165 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty; additionally, 21 canines died in the line of <br />duty; and <br />-Whereas, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and remembers those <br />recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives to protect and <br />serve. <br />Wow, Therefore, be it Proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Indian <br />River County, Florida, that May 11th -17th 2025 is recognized as National Police Week in honor of the <br />service of law enforcement officers in our community and communities across the nation. May 15th is <br />recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families, and U.S. flags <br />should be flown at Half -Staff. <br />Adopted this 12th day of May, 2025.
