experts say -there is little erosion south of any seawall, he has <br />seen what can happen. He begged the Board to require definitive <br />mitigation for any erosion caused by the seawalls and to be certain <br />none of those properties were built seaward of the coastal setback <br />line. <br />Sue Michaels, of 1946 Surfside Terrace, stated that many of <br />the neighbors walk the beach every day and want to keep it that <br />way. They are opposed to building seawalls. No one wants anyone <br />to lose their home; however, they. feel there are other ways to <br />protect them such as sandbagging or beach renourishment. Soft <br />armoring would protect the turtles and other environmental life <br />while seawalls would destroy the beach. <br />Evelyn Taggert, of 1935 Anglers Cove, believed the rocks on <br />the Bunger property go out 9 feet, 3 feet deep, and she was <br />distressed to feel there would be more rocks installed in <br />connection with these seawalls. <br />Bob Stanford, of 1495 Treasure Cove Lane, walks every day on <br />the beach and in the early spring he observed that the beach.was,, <br />scraped in front of some of these properties. He felt seawalls can <br />be very destructive to the beaches and the property owners should <br />make every effort to renourish the beach instead. The neighbors <br />are not hostile to Mrs. Bunger's problem, they just want a dune in <br />front of the seawall. <br />Bob Gestrich, of 1561 Smugglers Cove, felt the Board should <br />consider the definition of "emergency" and think long and hard <br />before granting these permits. <br />Adam Bolinger, of 2006 Surfside, confirmed there is a beach <br />there and felt that seawalls will not preserve the quality of life <br />as defined in Indian River County. <br />R. T. Simpson, of Summerplace, had lost about 60 feet of <br />beach, together with 3 sets of steps and 5 small decks. He <br />believed the seawalls are necessary. <br />Blades Robinson, of 2126 Cavalla Road, stated he does not own <br />ocean -front property, but his parents do and he has great concern <br />for them. He was born here and moved next door to his parents <br />which puts him in a unique position. He has seen a lot of changes. <br />He had an opportunity to look through some old photo albums and <br />showed pictures of a 1980 pool deck with a dune crossover at his <br />parents' home. The 1984 Thanksgiving storm took a considerable <br />amount of the beach. They lost their deck in November of 1992 and <br />added steps and braces in 1993. Then Tropical Storm Gordon in 1994 <br />took more. They had to run a gangplank from the deck to the dune <br />line. His parents would like to be considered also for an <br />emergency seawall permit. He requested that, if the Board is going <br />NOVEMBER 19, 1996 <br />33 <br />BOOK 99 F'a,,E 8JO <br />
