Fourth grade class of 25 students and a Varying Exceptionalities class of 6 students. <br />VI. Project Description: <br />A. Activities: <br />1. Student trip to Suntrust Bank. to apply for a loan and to open the <br />business checking account. <br />2. A trip to meet with County Commissioners to secure permits and <br />execute a land lease. <br />3. Students will test the soil on the land parcil with assistance from the <br />FFA Club of Sebastian River H.S. <br />4. Students will visit the strawberry field bi-weekly to weed, water, plant, <br />and harvest fruit. <br />5. Students will design and develop marketing information to sell fruit. <br />6. Students will relate farm activities to classwork. <br />7. Students will correspond with pen pals in Okeechobee, Fl. to compare <br />and contrast agricultural projects. <br />8. Students will visit their pen pals at the end of their harvesting, to view <br />their pen pals' environmental center. <br />B. Materials: <br />Strawberry Plants Aprons, Gloves, Hats <br />Straw Strawberry boxes <br />Black Plastic Scarecrows, fake snakes <br />Shovels, hoes, rakes, trowels <br />Organic Insecticides <br />C. Evaluation: <br />1. A pre/post test about strawberries, business, checking skills, general <br />knowledge about planting, etc. <br />2. Marketing information, such as brochures, a video tape, etc. will be put <br />together. <br />3. The crop yield will be measured by the amount of strawberry pints that <br />can be retrieved from it. <br />4. Parent and student surveys will be conducted at the completion of the <br />project. <br />D. Anticipated Time Line: <br />The project will start in November and conclude after harvesting <br />(approximately in May). <br />VII. Resources: <br />The School District will provide bus transportation <br />The Indian River County Farm Bureau will provide technical assistance, Roto- <br />Tilling, <br />otaTilling, and other needed supplies, such as organic pesticides, soil tests, etc. <br />The FFA Club at Sebastian River High School will provide assistance, guidance <br />and education. <br />The Parents of our students will provide needed support in the areas of weeding, <br />feeding, watering, and suppling goodies for the fire fighters. <br />The Fire Fighters of Station #S will provide periodic watering for the field. <br />33 <br />January 7, 1997 BOOK . ���� <br />
