Keating, P <br />Community Developme Director <br />FROM: Keith Burnsed, AICP <br />MPO Planner <br />DATE: May 13, 1997 <br />SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION TO SUBMIT TRANSPORTATION <br />ENHANCEMENT PROJECT APPLICATIONS <br />It is requested that the data herein presented be given formal <br />consideration by the Board of County Commissioners at their regular <br />meeting of May 20, 1997. <br />The federal Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of <br />1991 (ISTEA) mandates that 10% of all Surface Transportation <br />Program (STP) funds allocated under the provisions of the act be <br />available for transportation enhancements. Funding for enhancement <br />projects is distributed through the FDOT District Offices. <br />Enhancement projects are projects which go beyond traditional <br />transportation projects, yet enhance the transportation system. To <br />be eligible for funding, proposed enhancement projects must have a <br />direct relationship to the intermodal transportation system, and <br />this relationship must be one of either function, proximity, or <br />impact ." <br />Qualifying activities which can be funded with enhancement funds <br />are limited to the following:' <br />a) Provision of facilities for pedestrians and bicycles <br />b) Acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites <br />c) Scenic or historic highway programs <br />d) Landscaping and other scenic beautification <br />e) Historic preservation <br />f) Rehabilitation and operation of historic tra.*:sportation <br />buildings, structures or facilities (including historic <br />railroad facilities and canals) <br />g) Preservation of abandoned railway corridors (including the <br />conversion and use thereof for pedestrian or bicycle trails) <br />h) Control and removal of outdoor advertising <br />i) Archaeological planning and research <br />j) Mitigation of water pollution due to highway runoff <br />MAY 20, 1997 <br />4 <br />BOOK 101 PAGE 5J`-,`i` <br />E �i <br />
