They <br />stressed that controlled burns help with the safety issue by reducing the fuel load in case of <br />accidental fire. Messrs. Spataro and Rath also work with private property owners to <br />encourage them to use safe burning methods by considering the timing and smoke drift. <br />They recommended the Board support the resolution. <br />Commissioner Adams commended the efforts and actions of the local Florida Division <br />of Forestry in both prescribed burns and accidental burns; they have been extremely <br />cooperative and helpful to our own Emergency Management and the Fire Department. <br />Vice Chairman Macht read the proposed resolution for the benefit of the audience in <br />the Chamber and on television. <br />The Vice Chairman CALLED THE QUESTION and the motion <br />passed unanimously. (4-0 Chairman Tippin absent) (Resolution <br />#98-021 adopted) <br />RESOLUTION 98- 21 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER <br />COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE USE <br />OF PRESCRIBED BURNING AS A LAND <br />MANAGEMENT TOOL IN INDIAN RIVER <br />COUNTY. <br />WHEREAS, prescribed burning is a critical resource management tool that, when properly <br />administered, minimizes impacts on air quality, protects public safety, and enriches property <br />aesthetics; and <br />WHEREAS, much of the ecosystem of Indian River County, including endangered, <br />threatened and species of special concern, is fire dependent for its vitality; and <br />WHEREAS, prescribed burning reduces accumulated fuels and consequently lessens the <br />likelihood and severity of uncontrolled and damaging wildfires; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature enacted Chapter 590.026, Florida Statutes, that <br />recognized the benefits of conducting prescribed burning; and <br />WHEREAS, rules governing open burning in Indian River County require that proper <br />authorization be obtained from the Florida Division of Forestry, Department of Agriculture and <br />Consumer Services, prior to conducting prescribed burning in Indian River County. <br />February 17, 1998 <br />21 <br />
