PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING JANUARY 29.1999 As TIYOMAs PAINE <br />DAYI1yINDIANRIVER COUNTY <br />The Chairman presented the following Proclamation: <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING JANUARY 29,1999 <br />AS "THOMAS PAINE DAY" IN <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, Thomas Paine crystallized the decision of the Colonies for independence with <br />his work, "Common Sense"; and <br />WHEREAS, Thomas Paine supported the revolution through personal service, his fortune and <br />his inspirational "Crisis Papers"; and <br />WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was the first to write "The U.S. of America", to suggest a League <br />of Nations, to promote universal and equal education for boys and girls, equality for women and <br />religious freedom; and <br />WHEREAS, his life and work have inspired democratic thinkers all over the world; and <br />WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was born on January 29, 1737, and the date of January 29 has <br />been chosen as a date to honor his life and work: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that January 29, 1999 be designated <br />as the first annual <br />"THOMAS PAINE DAY" <br />in Indian River County.
