Tabar, / <br />Coastal Engineer I <br />SUBJECT: Beach Preservation Plan Update <br />DATE: April 27, 1998 <br />On April 14, 1998, County staff presented the Board of County <br />Commissioners with the Beach Preservation Plan Update. The Board <br />approved setting a public discussion for May 5, 1998. <br />The existing Beach Preservation Plan was adopted in 1988 by the <br />Board of County Commissioners and has been revised by County staff. <br />The Beach Preservation Plan Update is presented herein and <br />identifies areas of predominate coastal erosion and presents a <br />preferred management strategy. The Plan includes an investigation <br />which evaluated the condition of the beaches between 1986 and 1997 <br />and recommends specific project locations. <br />The Plan divides the County into eight planning Sectors with each <br />representing a portion of coastline that is considered uniform and <br />continuous in physical and jurisdictional boundaries. Each Sector <br />includes a recommended planning element. <br />AT IVES AbM ANALX rR <br />A two-tiered approach was recommended to address the County's <br />erosion problems: <br />1) Restore and maintain the beaches south of Sebastian Inlet <br />which have been adversely impacted by the Inlet's presence. <br />2) Restore and maintain areas of "critical erosion". <br />Four specific project locations were identified as follows: <br />1) Sebastian Inlet <br />2) Wabasso Beach <br />3) City of Vero Beach <br />4) South Beach Area <br />The Beach Preservation Plan Update was presented to and approved by <br />the County Beach & Shore Preservation Advisory Committee. <br />Staff recommends adoption of the Beach Preservation Plan Update. <br />MAY 59 1998 <br />0 <br />-46- <br />• <br />I <br />
