5/98(ordlsubdname)Vk <br />ORDINANCE NO. 98- 1 o <br />AN ORDINANCE OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, <br />FLORIDA, CHANGING THE NAME OF THE <br />"COLORED SCHOOL SUBDIVISION" TO THE <br />"DOUGLAS SUBDIVISION." <br />WHEREAS, Section 177.142, Florida Statutes, allows a county by ordinance <br />to change the name of subdivisions that the Board of County Commissioners <br />determines constitute an ethnic or racial slur; and <br />WHEREAS, the residents of the Wabasso area have requested that the <br />name of the subdivision recorded in Plat Book 2, Page 62, of the public records of <br />Indian River County, be changed from the "Colored School Subdivision" to the <br />"Douglas Subdivision"; and <br />WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners finds that this change is in <br />the public interest; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: <br />1. The Board hereby determines that the name the "Colored School Subdivision" <br />constitutes a racial and ethnic slur and should be changed to the "Douglas <br />Subdivision." <br />2. The Clerk of the Circuit Court shall place in the margin of the plat a notation <br />that the name has been changed as well as other data as required by law. <br />This ordinance shall take effect upon filing with the Florida Secretary of <br />State. <br />The ordinance was advertised in the Vero Beach Press Journal on the <br />15 day of May , 1998, for a public hearing to be held on the 26 day <br />of Mau , 1998, at which time it was moved for adoption by Commissioner <br />Adams , seconded by Commissioner Eggert . and adopted <br />by the following vote: <br />Chairman John W.
