PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING NOVEMBER 1-7. 1998 AS <br />"NATIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK" IN <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />Chairman Tippin read the following and presented it to Lisa Angell who accepted <br />with thanks on behalf of the Humane Society. <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING NOVEMBER 1-7,1998 <br />AS "NATIONAL AND4AL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK" <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, there are more than sixty-six million cats and fifty-eight million dogs living in <br />households across the United States, and 26,692 companion animals living in Indian River County; and <br />WHEREAS, the irresponsibility of some pet owners has resulted in animals running loose and <br />unsupervised, causing a threat to public health and safety; and <br />WHEREAS, indiscriminate breeding allowed by irresponsible pet owners who have not had their <br />animals spayed or neutered has contributed to pet overpopulation; and <br />WHEREAS, animal shelter employees, like police officers and emergency medical personnel, must <br />respond to these community problems and crises; and <br />WHEREAS, animal control officers are often the fust ones to offer help and protection to animals <br />in need: and <br />WHEREAS, animal shelters act as safe havens for homeless and abused animals, providing them <br />with comfort and care, rescuing injured animals, educating the public, and matching up families with new <br />animal companions; and <br />WHEREAS, animal shelters help both animals and people in many ways: by returning lost pets to <br />their owners, enforcing animal control laws, rescuing injured animals, educating the public; and <br />WHEREAS, the work of animal shah= and the important services they provide often go unnoticed <br />and under appreciated by the citizens: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that November 1-7,1998 be designated <br />as <br />NATIONAL AND 4AL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK <br />in Indian River County, and the Board recognizes the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River <br />County for providing lifesaving services to animals and people in our community. <br />Adopted this 3 day of November, 1998. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMLSSIONERS <br />INDIAN RMM COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />November 3, 1998 <br />BOOK 107 P'JE 440 <br />
