The problem is the need for an end-user. He reminded <br />them it took 12 years to develop the Indian River Mall. <br />Chairman Macht asked if anyone in the gallery wished to comment. <br />Guy Barber, 1678 Highland Avenue, was interested in corporate involvement with <br />the school system. He asked the 5 top skills required of students coming out of the school <br />system into the work force. <br />Mr. Fowler remarked that basic sheet metal skills (machinists) are a very rare find <br />and there are an increasing number of opportunities with Microtech and Piper Aircraft. <br />Mr. Hart added that computer knowledge and word processing, communication <br />skills, math, as well as self-worth and self-respect were all important. <br />Freddie Woolfork, Director of the Gifford Youth Activities Center, advised they are <br />trying to work with Project HOPE. They are doing a survey to determine what jobs are being <br />sought. The next step is to establish a job fair. They need employers to come; they want to <br />bring everybody to the table to start working on resolving the issues. They are looking for <br />a listing of jobs that show "owner benefits." He expects to be presenting some great things <br />to the Board in the future. <br />Renee Renzi, 340 Waverly Place, asked if there is any committee that works on <br />finding tenants for large empty commercial buildings, citing examples of the Vero Mall and <br />Velde Ford on US# 1. <br />Chairman Macht commented that if you listen to the Press Journal, the entire <br />community wants the County Commission to move into all the vacant buildings. <br />Linda Gonzalez stated it takes time, especially if a building needs to be retrofitted. <br />Recently another government agency was looking at some of the buildings.
