• <br />Sheriff Gary C. Wheeler stated that he would be happy to address the helicopter issue <br />after the grant matter is concluded. <br />Commissioner Macht asked Sheriff Wheeler if people were given rides that day, and <br />Sheriff Wheeler responded "absolutely not." <br />cars. <br />Sheriff Wheeler stated that the helicopter was there along with fire trucks and police <br />Vice Chairman Ginn was certain it was an enforcement action and asked that the <br />Board return to consideration of the grant. <br />Commissioner Macht stated it was not an enforcement action, and Sheriff Wheeler <br />stated it was a totally separate issue. <br />Commissioner Macht disagreed and said the Sheriff's use of County resources is tied <br />with everything he does. He thought the Sherif s veracity goes to how the Board would <br />judge the validity of his report. At the very least, it would affect how he was going to vote <br />for the (UHP) issue. <br />down. <br />Sheriff Wheeler commented that was obvious, appreciated his position, and stepped <br />Ms. Shields resumed the podium, and Chairman Adams asked her the number of <br />deputies actually on the road now versus when the program started and how that number <br />related to the 17 positions which were grant -funded. <br />Ms. Shields did not have those numbers with her and advised she would provide them <br />to the Board. <br />More specifically, Chairman Adams was concerned about the financial impact <br />especially in the third year of the program which would be at least $250,000. <br />Ms. Shields was aware of the concern and if the County was not in a growing mode, <br />the Sheriff's Office would not be looking for ways to fund additional positions.
