5. 1. GENERAL FUND <br />matter. <br />The Chairman opened the public hearing and asked if anyone wished to be heard in this <br />Leland Gibbs, 620 16' Avenue, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, asked the Board to <br />support their transportation service for veterans. They have been doing this for the last 12 years and <br />have never before asked for assistance. Last year they made 382 trips, while this year they have <br />already made 676 trips. They are asking for $35,000 to be included in the general budget to obtain <br />medical attention for the veterans. There are never any charges to the veterans but donations are <br />accepted. - <br />Chairman Adams noted that they provide a wonderful service for the veterans. <br />Commissioner Macht stated that the proposed new veterans clinic will reduce the need for <br />transportation, and Mr. Gibbs agreed that it will help but is probably about a year away. The trip to <br />the existing clinic is 176 miles one way. <br />Commissioner Stanbridge believed there will be a potential source of funding through the <br />Transportation Disadvantaged funds. <br />Mr. Gibbs also noted that citizens can add $1 to their fees for license plates and automobile <br />registration as a contribution to the Veterans. <br />Assistant County Administrator Joe Baird asked that the Veterans fill out an application which <br />is usually completed by non -profits in early March. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Macht, <br />SECONDED by Commissioner Ginn, that the Board fund <br />the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the amount of $35,000. <br />Commissioner Tippin was surprised that the County was not already funding this <br />transportation service, and Mr. Gibbs stated that St. Lucie County has funded their Veterans' services <br />for the last 10 years. <br />OW 114 PG 830 <br />SEPTEMBER 6, 2000 -4- BUDGET <br />
