THE LAST LIVING PLAYER TO <br />HAVE FACED BABE RUTH <br />The Chairman presented the following Proclamation to Mr. Auker: <br />PROCLAMATION <br />HONORING ELDEN AUKER THE LAST LIVING <br />PLAYER TO HAVE FACED BABE RUTH <br />WHEREAS, Eldon Auker has resided in Indian River County since 1974. In 1933, as <br />a rookie with the Detroit Tigers, he made his first ever trip to the Big Apple and Yankee <br />Stadium, where he pitched to the late, great Babe Ruth; and <br />WHEREAS, Eldon Auker remains today the last living player to have pitched to Babe <br />Ruth, and will be honored by many famous people at a Legends Goff and Banquet Event <br />at Dodgertown In Vero Beach on November 3id and 4'", 2000; and <br />WHEREAS, Eldon Auker pitched for the Detroit Tigers In the 1934 and 1935 World <br />Series, and his best season was in 1935 where his 18 win, 7 loss percentage was the <br />American League Best; and <br />WHEREAS, he spent the 1939 season with the Boston Red Sox, where he roomed <br />with the great Jimmy Foxx and saw the major league debut of a rookie named Ted Williams; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Eldon Auker ended his ten-year career In 1942, pitching his final three <br />seasons with the St. Louis Browns, where he was voted into the Team's Hall of Fame. He <br />compiled a career recons of 130 wins and 101 losses, including 126 complete games; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1969, former Kansas State University President James McCain called <br />Eldon Auker the Greatest Athlete in Kansas State History and College Humor Magazine <br />picked him for All American In football, as quarterback: in basketball, as a guard; and <br />baseball where he pitched. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board recognizes the <br />accomplishments of Eldon Auker and honors him on his Se Birthday, not just as a great <br />pitcher, but as an outstanding human being. <br />Adopted this 20 day of October, 2000. <br />OCTOBER 24, 2000 <br />-3- <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Fran B.
