The recycling rate puts Brevard County in the top 5 Florida counties with a traditional recycling rate of 50 <br />percent or higher. <br />According to the latest recycling data (2013) released by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida's official <br />recycling rate is now 49 percent, up one percent from last year. This represents a substantial increase in the amount of solid <br />waste recycled — from 9.7 million tons in 2012 to 11.8 million tons in 2013. <br />"We have exceeded the goal for 2014 and will continue to work hard to meet further recycling goals" said Hillary Arena, Recyclii <br />Coordinator for Brevard County Solid Waste Management Department. "We need to reach out to our commercial businesses to <br />'step up to the plate' and help us achieve the ultimate goal of recycling 75 percent by 2020." <br />Residents are encouraged to recycle at home and to find out what recycling efforts are underway at their local schools, their <br />workplace and their community groups. DEP continues to promote its Recycling Recognition Program and is working to raise <br />awareness and interest. <br />"Thank you" to the citizens of Brevard County, said Euripides Rodriguez, director of the Brevard County Solid Waste Managemei <br />Department. "We thank them for their efforts and help in achieving this goal; we could not do it without them." <br />The top 10 counties based on traditional recycling rates are: <br />1. Sarasota, 58 percent <br />2. Alachua, Martin, Collier, 54 percent (three-way tie) <br />5. Brevard, 52 percent <br />6. Manatee, 48 percent <br />7. Orange, 47 percent <br />8. Lee, 46 percent <br />9.
