RESOLUTION NO. 2015- 084 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR CONTINUATION IN <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY OF THE LOCAL <br />GOVERNMENT INFRASTRUCTURE ONE -CENT SALES <br />SURTAX/DISCRETIONARY SALES SURTAX <br />AUTHORIZED PURSUANT TO SECTION 212.055, <br />FLORIDA STATUTES. <br />WHEREAS, Section 212.055, Florida Statutes, authorizes a county discretionary sales <br />surtax of up to one cent for a period of up to fifteen years, if approved by the voters of the <br />county, for the funding of infrastructure of the county and municipalities within the county; and <br />WHEREAS, the voters of Indian River County approved the one -cent discretionary sales <br />surtax for a period of fifteen years at a referendum held on March 14, 1989; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2002, the voters of Indian River County approved an extension of the <br />one -cent discretionary sales surtax until December 31, 2019; and <br />WHEREAS, the revenue from this tax has helped to reduce the burden on property taxes <br />within Indian River County; and <br />WHEREAS, the revenue from this tax results in lower overall impact fees through <br />assisting with providing an environment favorable to economic development; and <br />WHEREAS, a continuation of this tax beyond the expiration date of December 31, <br />2019, will be in the general interest by allowing tourists and other visitors to Indian River <br />County to help pay for some of the amenities which they enjoy here; and <br />WHEREAS, before moving forward with enacting an ordinance and taking the issue to <br />the voters, the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County wishes to express its <br />support of extending the tax and also seeks such support from the municipalities within Indian <br />River County, <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, THAT: <br />Section 1. The above "WHEREAS" clauses are true and correct, and are hereby adopted <br />as findings of the Board. <br />Section 2.
