it <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF APRIL AS <br />CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT AWARENESS and PREVENTION MONTH <br />WHEREAS, research shows when infants have a healthy start in fife and enter into a safe, nurturing, <br />stimulating, and stable environment brain development and child wellbeing will improve; and <br />WHEREAS, children who have suffered abuse or neglect are at least 25 percent more likely to experience <br />problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health <br />problems; and <br />WHEREAS, research and data shows high quality childcare and preschool experiences make a difference <br />in the lives of children; and <br />WHEREAS, 46.9% of children in Indian River County, that have no control over their environment, were <br />exposed in the past 30 days to secondhand smoke that is damaging to their physical health and increases the <br />risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and lower respiratory tract infections; and <br />WHEREAS, there are citizens throughout Indian River County that are encouraged to support <br />organizations and agencies that promote a safe and nurturing environment for children and families; and <br />WHEREAS, affordable after-school and summer care programs give single parents, dual working parent <br />households, and at -risk children and families affordable, safe, and structured options for their children, thereby <br />alleviating stress in the household; and <br />WHEREAS, when communities work together and agencies partner with one another to link families with <br />resources, we can better meet ALL the dimensions of a child's well-being to ensure that our children are <br />healthy, successful, safe, and thriving; and <br />WHEREAS, the Healthy Start Coalition, Giving Kidz a Chance, CASTLE, Whole Child, Tobacco Free <br />Partnership, Childcare Resources, the 5 Exchange Clubs and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County <br />work together to promote awareness of, and prevent, child abuse and neglect. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISiONERS OF INDIAN <br />RiVER COUNTY FLORIDA, that the Board designates the month of April as Child Abuse & Neglect <br />Awareness & Prevention month, and calls on all citizens to engage in awareness and prevention activities <br />designed to make our community healthier and safer for all children. <br />Adopted this 7th day of April, 2015 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISIONERS <br />INDI N RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />.'� <br />Wesley S.
