PROCLAMATION 5C. <br /> RECOGNIZING MAY 10 THROUGH 16, 2015 AS <br /> NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br /> WHEREAS, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br /> across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's <br /> Office and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br /> WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May <br /> 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which that date falls as National <br /> Police Week; and <br /> WHEREAS, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in <br /> the United States every 58 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than <br /> 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br /> WHEREAS, a total of 1,501 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the past 10 years, <br /> or 150 per year. 125 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2014; and <br /> WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and remembers <br /> those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives <br /> to protect and serve; and <br /> WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored <br /> during a Wreath Placement Ceremony on the morning of May 11 at the Indian River County <br /> Courthouse. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 10-16, 2015, is recognized as <br /> National Police Week in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community and <br /> communities across the nation, and May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor <br /> of all fallen officers and their families, and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff. <br /> Adopted this 5th day of May, 2015.
