RED CROSS - As of August 31, 19+9 <br />250 applications for help on damaged <br />private homes <br />$ 152000 <br />• <br />159000 <br />$3,4539500 <br />* Agriculture - based on 1,000,000 boxes of fruit ( approximately half of total crop) <br />on ground and replanting pperations in vege&ables. <br />** Not reflected,in Item 5• <br />to -wits <br />- - - - - - - - - - - - - - <br />RFS OLUT I ON <br />Commissioner Stewart introduced the following Resolution and moved its adoption, <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County, and the mdnicipalities therein, in common with a <br />considerable area of the State of Florida, have suffered a major disaster by reason of the <br />hurricane which occurred in such area on August 26 and 270 1949,and which disaster is evidenced <br />in part by an estimate of the damage resulting from such hurricane hereto attached and made a <br />part of this resolution; and, <br />WHEREAS, the principal and basic industry of this area is the growing, packing and <br />processing of citrus fruit and as a result of such hurricane, and through absolute necessity, <br />employers have been compelled to discontinue their customary and normal operations in the <br />groves, fields.and packing houses and as a'result a very considerable number of citizens of <br />this County are without employment; and <br />WHEREAS, regular employment for such persons is necessary in order that they may <br />provide the actual necessity of life for themselves and their families and it is essential <br />that immediate employment be provided for them; and, <br />AREAS, funds are necessary for the repair of properties, for the growing of <br />crops and for similar purposes; THEREFORE, <br />BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida, <br />that it does herewith request Governor Fuller Warren to ask the President of the United <br />States for disaster relief in the way of grants to the counties, Boards of Public Instruction, <br />cities and drainage districts in said area in order that they may immediately repair storm <br />damage and give employment particularly to what is known as "common labor"„ and further that <br />provision may be made for loans for growers of crops. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Honorable Alex MacWilliam, as Chairman, and E. G. <br />Thatcher, as Secretary, of Indian River County Citizens Committee for Disaster Relief connect- <br />ed with the State and Federal Governments, to be requested to transmit copies of this <br />Resolution to Governor Warren and to the Members of Congress representing this area. <br />On motion of Commissioner Waddell, seconded by Commissioner Stewart and carried, <br />the Board agreed to provide a sum not to exceed $2500 as a hurricane disaster emergency fund <br />when, as and if needed. Said sum to be paid from the Road and Bridge Fund of Indian River <br />County. <br />There being no further business on motion made, seconded and carried, the Board <br />then ad j ourned. <br />0 ATTEST: <br />
