3/26/96(reeo\cemetery)Vk <br />RESOLUTION N0. 96-44 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF ESTABLISHING A NATIONAL <br />CEMETERY IN HIGHLANDS COUNTY. <br />WHEREAS, there is a trend for military veterans to move to the Florida <br />area in increasing numbers; and <br />WHEREAS, the average age of such veterans is 55 to 75, thus indicating <br />an increase in the number of veteran's deaths in the state of Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, at the present time there are four Veterans National Cemeteries <br />in the State of Florida, two of which are closed; and <br />WHEREAS, the Veterans Administration ie seeking new sites for additional <br />National Cemeteries for deceased military veterans who desire a burial in a <br />National Cemetery; and <br />WHEREAS, the Avon Park Air Force Range consisting of eome 105,000 acres <br />has some areas that might be suitable for a National Cemetery site; and <br />WHEREAS, the locat ion of a National Cemetery properly placed within the <br />boundaries of the Avon Park Air Force Range would not interfere with the <br />Range's basic mission; and <br />WHEREAS, if it ie determined that the establishment of such a cemetery <br />would be detrimental to the overall mission of the United States Air Force, <br />that an alternate site be sought within the Highlands County area; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board hereby goes on record as <br />supporting the location of the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in <br />the area of Highlands County, Florida. <br />The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Eggert, and the <br />motion was seconded by Commissioner Bird, and, upon being put to a vote, the <br />vote was as follows: <br />Chairman Fran B. Adams Aye <br />Vice Chairman Carolyn K. Eggert Aye <br />Commissioner Richard N. Bird Aye <br />Commissioner Kenneth R. Macht Aye <br />Commissioner John W.
