3/96(RES\tourist3)LEGAL(NOC/nba) <br />RE80LUTION NO. 96-_§ <br />A RESOLUTION OF THB BOARD OF COUNTY C0181I88IONERB 01 <br />INDIAN RIVER COMM FLORIDA URGING THE FLORIDA <br />LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT ROUSE BILL 707 AND SENATE BILL <br />958, REMOVING THE TOURISM FUNCTION FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF <br />COIOQRCE TO AN INDUBTRY-LED TOURISM C0MMISSION. <br />NHE8EA8, the State of Florida's promotional function currently <br />resides in the State Departmant of Commerca; and <br />WHEREAS, under the management of the Department of Commerce, <br />tourism in Florida has become stagnant; and <br />NHERZAB, states such as Illinois spend double what the State of <br />Florida does on tourism promotion, and even the Commonwealth of Massachusetts <br />spends more on tourism than the State of Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, tourism industry leaders have pledged to raise as much as <br />$30 million a year in private sector funds for tourism promotion if the state <br />allows them to take over the Department of Commerce's Division of Tourism's <br />current budget; and <br />WHEREAS, the Tourist Development Council of Indian River County, <br />Florida unanimously urged the County Commission to support legislative <br />initiatives through the Florida Association of Counties and independently <br />through Tourist Development Council Chairman John Tippin, removing the state <br />tourism function from the Department of Commerce and putting it under an <br />industry -led Tourism Commission, <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RE80LVED, that the Board of County <br />Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida urges the Florida Legislature <br />to support House Bill 707 and Senate Bill 958, removing the tourism function <br />from the Department of Commerce and putting it under an industry -lad Tourism <br />Commission. <br />The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner Macht and <br />seconded by Commissioner Eggert and, being put to a vote, the vote was as <br />follows: <br />Chairman Fran B.
