PROCLAMATION HONORING RALPH W. SEXTON <br />The Chairman entered the following Proclamation upon the record: <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br />PROCLAMATION <br />HONORING RALPH W. SEXTON <br />WHEREAS, Ralph W. Sexton has been a lifelong resident of Indian River County, <br />having been raised on a farm on 12th Street and graduating in Animal Husbandry from the <br />University of Florida in 1950; and <br />WHEREAS, Ralph Sexton is a Southern gentleman with a charismatic personality. <br />Ralph was never interested in running for a political office, but he has been an active participant <br />throughout his life in supporting local, state and federal candidates who adhered to the same <br />philosophies as he does. He has been a strong advocate of private property rights and <br />preservation of Agricultural land, and has devoted most of his life to explaining the importance of <br />prohibiting encroachment of business and residential into the limited Agricultural area; and <br />WHEREAS, at the age of 29, Ralph was appointed to the Indian River County <br />Planning and Zoning Commission, where he served for 22 years, 11 of those as Chairman. <br />During that period of time, Ralph was instrumental in coordinating workshops with business and <br />environmental groups to develop the County's most ambitious planning effort that had been <br />mandated by state regulations; and <br />WHEREAS, for more than 30 years, Ralph has been heavily involved in prevention of <br />coastal erosion and has attended local, state and federal seminars and technical meetings to <br />meet with experts and discuss preservation of the beaches in Indian River County. He has <br />worked tirelessly to get sand on the beaches and has been instrumental in establishing Save <br />Our Shores to help inform the public of possible solutions to the erosion problem. While serving <br />as its President for 15 years, he has maintained personal contact with state and federal political <br />leaders. <br />JANUARY 22, 2002 <br />-12- <br />
