WHEREA ty 1894 , when Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad laid rails <br /> through Fort Pierce , the original Indian River Inlet was still open and the new Fort Pierce <br /> Inlet was twenty years away from being dug . Ships had been carrying fish and oysters , <br /> pineapples and citrus to northern ports for over three decades through this old Inlet. Yearly <br /> events in this frontier town were the cattle drives from as far away as the Kissimmee Prairie <br /> and the Saint Johns Valley; and <br /> WHEREAS , on February 2 , 1901 , the male registered voters met and organized a <br /> town government, and Fort Pierce was incorporated in what was then Brevard County. By <br /> 1905 it was the county seat of a new County, Saint Lucie , that stretched from the Saint <br /> Sebastian River to the northern border of Palm Beach County. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS , INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board , on behalf of the <br /> citizens of Indian River County, wishes the City of Fort Pierce a Very Happy Birthday, with <br /> many more years as our good friend and neighbor. <br /> Adopted this 23rd day of January, 2001 . <br /> BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br /> INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br /> 77 � H <br /> Caroline D .
