PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MARCH 2002 AS MENTAL <br />RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH (ARC) <br />Chairman Stanbridge read the following proclamation into the record and presented <br />it to Mary Jim Martin who accepted on behalf of ARC and the developmentally disabled of <br />Indian River County. <br />March 5, 2002 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF MARCH, 2002, AS <br />MENTAL RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, mental retardation is a condition which affects more than 7 million Americans and <br />their families; and <br />WHEREAS, public awareness and education enhance a community's understanding of the <br />issues affecting people with mental retardation; and <br />WHEREAS, people with mental retardation can be vital and vibrant members of our communities, <br />improving the quality of life for all of us; and <br />WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated National Mental Retardation Awareness <br />Month, with more than 120,000 members and 1,000 chapters of the Association for Retarded Citizens <br />(ARC) undertaking public awareness, educational and fundraising initiatives; and <br />WHEREAS, the ARC of the United States is the nation's leading volunteer -based organization <br />advocating for and with people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their <br />families. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the month of March, 2002, be recognized as <br />MENTAL RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH <br />in Indian River County, Florida, and urges the citizens of Indian River County to give full support towards <br />efforts to enable people with mental retardation to live full and productive lives of inclusion in our <br />communities. <br />2 <br />U <br />Len <br />"7'1 etij <br />3 wN 0 <br />
