PROCL <br />- FLORIDA ( <br />RATE <br />I' s <br />ONS - <br />COUNTY - APRIL 2001 <br />Chairman Ginn read the following proclamation and presented it to Commander Gene <br />Lee who accepted with thanks as a representative of the Sons of the Confederacy Veterans. <br />DESIGNATING APRIL, 2001 <br />AS FLORIDA CONFEDERATE <br />HISTORY MONTH IN INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, April is the month in which the Confederate States of America began <br />and ended their four-year struggle for a sovereign and independent nation; and <br />WHEREAS, our state constitution sets aside April 26th as a day to observe and <br />honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the Civil War, and <br />WHEREAS, in proportion to its population, Florida contributed more soldiers and <br />sailors to the Confederate services than any other state; and <br />WHEREAS, all Floridians should be knowledgeable of the history of the Civil War <br />battles fought here, including those at Olustee and at Natural Bridge; and <br />WHEREAS, we study the war between the Blue and the Gray for the same <br />reason we study all wars, with a view to understanding the historical events which <br />compelled them, so we may continue to learn to live together and seek to avoid future <br />conflicts: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the month of April, 2001 <br />be designated as <br />FLORIDA CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH <br />in Indian River County, and <br />the <br />Board urges all residents to engage <br />in historical study of <br />the events of 1861 to 1865 <br />and <br />to solemnly contemplate that time. <br />Adopted this 3rd day of April, 2001. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Caroline D.
