5 . PROCLAMATION - HONORING EDWARD " EDDIE " NETTO
<br /> Chairman Ginn announced that she was moving item 7 . C . to this heading and read the
<br /> following , which was accepted with thanks by Mr . Netto .

<br /> PROCLAMATION
<br /> HONORING EDWARD NETTO
<br /> Whereas . Edward Netto was born on May 30 , 1921 in Santa Clara , California , and also shared
<br /> his birth year with famous "Roots' author, Alex Haley, and the Sacco and Vanzetti murder trial. His
<br /> first eight years found America very prosperous under the able presidency of 'Quiet Cal Calvin
<br /> Coolidge , who served as President from 1921 to 1929 , and
<br /> Whereas. as an eight year old , the stock market crash on Black Tuesday, October 29 , 1929
<br /> did not greatly affect Eddie' s portfolio , and he survived the Great Depression, which ended with
<br /> World War It , and
<br /> Whereas. Eddie served his country in the United States Navy, along with many other brave
<br /> men and women , and their great sacrifice resulted in an American victory in 1945, and
<br /> Whereas, Eddie returned to Vero Beach where he saw the beginning and the ending of the
<br /> cold War, and witnessed the launching of the world's first satellite, Russia 's Sputnik in 1957 , and
<br /> Whereas, Eddie witnessed the election of the first Catholic President, John F. Kennedy, and
<br /> his shocking assassination on Friday, November 22, 1963 , and he saw America initiate its space
<br /> program with JFK's pledge to safely go to the moon and back in that decade, and
<br /> Whereas , Edward witnessed Thurgood Marshall become the first African-Amencan Supreme
<br /> Court Justice, in October 1967 , and
<br /> Whereas, he witnessed jet travel in the early 60's and Neil Armstrong fulfill JFK's dream of
<br /> walking on the moon on July 20, 1969 and retuming safely to earth, and
<br /> Whereas, Eddie lived though the 'flower power era of the 1970's and survived, and witnessed
<br /> the Panama Canal giveaway in September 1977 . He has witnessed the almost unbelievable
<br /> technologic advances of the 80's and 90's , and
<br /> Whereas, during the modem era from 1946 — 2001 , Eddie became an outstanding building
<br /> contractor in Indian River County, doing it all: building single family homes, schools, churches , multi-
<br /> family units as well as high rises, and
<br /> Whereas, he was, and continues to be, an outstanding community supporter and volunteer in
<br /> his unassuming, quiet manner, and as a Committee of One, Eddie persuaded sub-contractors to join
<br /> with him in the construction of the first building for the Association of Retarded Citizens. As a
<br /> principal volunteer, Eddie joined with others who saved and refurbished the Heritage Center, thereby
<br /> preserving a Vero Beach treasure, and
<br /> Whereas, Eddie continues to be a Fighting Indian Football Fan, and can be found among the
<br /> loyal supporters at Vero Beach High School home games, and
<br /> Whereas, he currently is serving on Indian River County's Space Needs Committee, lending
<br /> his expertise as a general contractor, and he has been a particular blessing to Indian River County
<br /> during his 58 years in our beautiful community,
<br /> Now, therefore, I Caroline Ginn . Chairman of the Indian River County Commission , do hereby
<br /> proclaim Saturday, June 2 , 2001 as Eddie Netto Day in Indian River County in recognition of his
<br /> numerous and outstanding contributions to our community and loin with others in wishing him a very
<br /> Happy Birthday.
<br /> Adopted this 12" day of June, 2001 .
