PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2002 <br />AS LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA AWARENESS MONTH <br />WHEREAS, blood -related cancers currently afflict more than 700,000 Americans, with an <br />estimated 110 000 new cases diagnosed each year; and <br />WHEREAS, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will kill an estimated 60,500 people in the <br />United States this year; and <br />WHEREAS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, through voluntary contributions, is <br />dedicated to finding cures for these diseases through research efforts and the support for those that <br />suffer from them and <br />WHEREAS, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society maintains an office in Indian River <br />County to support patients with these diseases and their family members in the State of Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, last year The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society provided $36 million in <br />research funding for blood -related cancers, and nearly 76 cents of every dollar spent by The <br />Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is used to support patient services, education and research <br />activities; and <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County is similarly committed to the eradication of these <br />diseases and supports the treatment of its citizens afflicted with them, and encourages private <br />efforts to enhance research funding and education programs to address these diseases. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the month of September, 2002, be <br />designated as <br />LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA AWARENESS MONTH <br />in Indian River County and the Board encourages participation in voluntary activities to support <br />education programs and the funding of research programs to find a cure for blood related cancers. <br />Adopted this 3rd day of September, 2002. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />September 3, 2002 <br />
