Mental Health and Substance Abuse <br />Tobacco Use <br />Table 51 shows the percentage of middle school students in Indian River and Florida who reported <br />'current cigarette use' from 2002 through 2014. Current cigarette use is defined as having smoked one <br />or more cigarettes during the past 30 days. While the rate in Florida has been on a steady downward <br />trend, the rate in Indian River has fluctuated, with a sharp increase between 2008 and 2009. Current cigarette use is defined as having smoked one <br />or more cigarettes during the past 30 days. In both the county and the state, the rate of middle school <br />student smokers decreased considerably between 2006 and 2014, with a 8.4 percentage point <br />decrease in Florida and a 9.7 percentage point decrease in Indian River.
