<br /> A . Policy
<br /> The policy of Indian River Memorial Hospital is that all employees shall have the opportunity to work in an
<br /> atmosphere and environment free from any form of harassment or retaliation based on race, color, religion, gender,
<br /> sex, national origin, age, handicap , disability , marital status, or any other characteristic protected by law . Such forms
<br /> of harassment or retaliation constitute discrimination under various state and federal laws and will not be tolerated
<br /> by the Hospital .
<br /> Indian River Memorial Hospital is further committed to continuing the practical application of this nondiscriminatory
<br /> policy in its daily conduct of business affairs .
<br /> B . Purpose
<br /> The purpose is to comply with governmental guidelines on harassment, and to maintain a non-discriminatory
<br /> environment .
<br /> C . Definitions
<br /> Harassment is defined as verbal or physical conduct that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an
<br /> individual because of his or her race, color, religion, gender, sex, national origin, age, handicap, disability , marital
<br /> status, or other protected characteristic that of his/her relatives, friends, or associates , and that :
<br /> 1 . Has the purpose or effect or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment ; or
<br /> 2. Has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual 's work performance; or
<br /> 3 . Otherwise adversely affects an individual's employment opportunities.
<br /> D . Amplification
<br /> Harassment has no place in the work environment and will not be tolerated by the Hospital . Because of the Hospital ' s
<br /> strong disapproval of offensive or inappropriate behavior at work, all employees must avoid any action or conduct
<br /> which could be viewed as harassment including but not limited to :
<br /> 1 . Epithets, slurs, negative stereotyping, or threatening, intimidating , or hostile acts, verbal
<br /> graphic, or physical conduct relating to an individual' s race, color, religion, gender, sex,
<br /> national origin, age, handicap, disability , marital status or other protected characteristic .
<br /> 2 . Creating a hostile or offensive working environment . Written or graphic material that
<br /> denigrates or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group because of race, color,
<br /> religion, gender, sex, national origin, age, handicap, disability , marital status or other protected
<br /> characteristic and that is placed on walls, bulletin boards , or elsewhere on Hospital premises, or
<br /> circulated in the workplace .
<br /> 3 . Harassment also includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other
<br /> verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature . The following are examples of sexual
<br /> harassment :
<br /> a. Verbal -- sexual innuendo, suggestive comments, insults, threats , stories or
<br /> jokes about gender-specific traits, sexual propositions ,
