SECTION 02485 <br />GRASSING <br />PART 1 -- GENERAL <br />1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK <br />The Contractor shall furnish all labor, equipment, and materials necessary for <br />grassing all areas disturbed by his operations and any other areas on the plans <br />indicated to receive grassing. It is the intent of this specification that damaged <br />areas are to be replaced in kind, with sod to be used for all maintained yard <br />areas. The Engineer shall designate those areas to receive seed and those <br />areas to receive sod. Engineer shall also designate the type of seed/sod to be <br />used in each area. Contractor shall take all steps practical to minimize the area <br />required to be sodded or seeded. All grassing shall be in accordance with <br />Section 570-1 through 570-5 of the 1986 FDOT Standard Specifications for Road <br />and Bridge Construction, except as modified herein. <br />1.02 STORAGE OF MATERIALS <br />The Contractor shall provide space for storage of sod prior to placement in a <br />manner that will not endanger or restrict pedestrian or vehicular traffic or interfere <br />with other aspects of the work. <br />PART 2 -- PRODUCTS <br />2.01 SOD <br />A. Types: Sod shall be St. Augustine Floratam, Argentine Bahia, Centipede, <br />or Bermuda, depending on type of existing sod in adjacent area to be <br />matched. Sod shall be well matted with roots. Where sodding will adjoin, <br />or be in sufficiently close proximity to private lawns, types of sod other <br />than those listed above may be used if desired by the affected property <br />owners and approved by the Engineer. Sod shall be delivered in <br />commercial -size rectangles, preferably 12 -inch by 24 -inch or larger. <br />B. Condition: The sod shall be sufficiently thick to secure a dense stand of <br />live grass. The sod shall be live, fresh, and uninjured at the time of <br />planting. It shall have a soil mat of sufficient thickness adhering firmly to <br />the roots to withstand all necessary handling. It shall be reasonably free <br />of weeds and other grasses. It shall be planted as soon as possible after <br />being dug and shall be kept moist from the time it is planted. <br />2.02 SEED <br />A. General: All seed shall meet the requirements of the State Department of <br />Agriculture and Consumer Services and all applicable State laws. The <br />seed shall have been harvested from the previous year's crop.
