Homeless Family Center <br /> Assets Build Futures <br /> Indian River Advisory Committee <br /> co PROGRAM DESCUPTION (Entire Section C, 1 — 6, not to exceed two pages) <br /> 1 . List Priority Needs area addressed . <br /> Mental Wellness Issues and Parental Support & Education <br /> 2. Briefly describe program activities including location of services . <br /> 65 hours of art therapy will be provided in small group settings. Activities will focus on visual <br /> art activities of various art forums such asL drawing, sculptures, painting, craft progjects, <br /> puppetry, etc. , which focus on self-expression . Art therapy classes focus on socialization and <br /> positive reinforcement for individual art expression. <br /> 500 hours of services provided by the child development specialist will include parenting groups, <br /> individual family consultation, and educational groups for elementary age, middle school and <br /> teens. Sessions will be focused on: building mutual respect; managing difficult behaviors; <br /> developing boundaries ; reinforcement focused on building self-esteem; communication; and <br /> developing positive parent/child relationships. <br /> Activities will occur at the residential facilities. Follow-up is provided to families residing in the <br /> transitional housing program; family consultations will continue as needs arise and children may <br /> continue to participate in activities. <br /> 3. Briefly describe how your program addresses the stated need/problem. Describe how <br /> your program follows a recognized " best practice" (see definition on page 12 of the <br /> Instructions) and provide evidence that indicates proposed strategies are effective with <br /> target population. <br /> Since 1990, the Search Institute has focused on the development of "healthy communities, <br /> healthy youth" through their research and implementation of programs which promote the 40 <br /> developmental assets of children. These assets, which include building external assets (support, <br /> empowerment, boundaries & expectations, constructive use of time) and internal assets <br /> (commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, positive identity) are the building <br /> blocks of healthy development of young people to grow up healthy, caring and responsible. The <br /> HFC proposed program for homeless families is designed to impact the internal asset of <br /> developing a positive identity in children through achieving personal power, self-esteem, a sense <br /> of purpose and a positive view of one ' s future. <br /> 7 <br />
