emergencies , and have available at all times competent workmen for the <br /> operation of the pumping equipment . The dewatering systems shall not be <br /> shut down between shifts , on holidays , or weekends , or during work <br /> stoppages . Pumps and engines for well point and other dewatering <br /> systems shall be operated with mufflers and at a minimum noise level <br /> suitable for a residential area . <br /> C . The control of groundwater shall be such that softening of the bottom of <br /> excavations , or formation of "quick" conditions or "boils " are prevented . <br /> Dewatering systems shall be designed and operated so as to prevent the <br /> removal of natural soils . The static water level shall be drawn down below <br /> the bottom of the excavation so as to maintain a dry working surface and to <br /> maintain the undisturbed state of the natural soils and to allow the <br /> placement of any fill or backfill to the required density. For structures , the <br /> groundwater table shall be lowered to at least two (2 ) feet below the <br /> maximum excavation depth . <br /> D . While dewatering for new construction in the vicinity of existing structures , <br /> depletion of the groundwater level underneath these existing structures may <br /> cause settlement . To avoid this settlement , the groundwater level under <br /> these structures shall be maintained . <br /> E . The release of groundwater to its static level shall be performed in such a <br /> ' manner as to maintain the undisturbed state of the natural foundation soils , <br /> prevent disturbance of compacted fill or backfill , and prevent flotation or <br /> movement of all structures , pipelines and sewers . <br /> F . Well point holes shall be completely filled with clean sand or grout at the <br /> time the points are pulled . If necessary , a rod or vibrator shall be used to <br /> prevent bridging of the backfill . <br /> G . Comply with Section 02225 — " Erosion Control and Treatment of Dewatering <br /> Water and Stormwater Runoff From the Construction Site . " <br /> 3 . 3 EXCAVATION <br /> IA . Perform all excavation required to complete the Work . Where it is <br /> necessary to cut roots projecting into an excavation or to trim branches for <br /> requipment clearance , all cut ends over 1 /2" diameter shall be treated with <br /> an asphalt based pruning paint . <br /> ' B .
