TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1962 <br />.The Board of County Commissioners of,Indian River County, <br />met at the Courthouse, Vero Beach, Florida, in d regular meeting held <br />at 8:00 o'clock, A. M., Tuesday, January 23,,1962. All members were <br />present. Also,present were Ed Schmucker, County Engineer; John Gould, <br />Attorney; Al Webber and Freda Wright, Deputy Clerks. <br />Mr. Studer, representing the Little League Baseball Club, <br />appeared before the Board and asked the Board to pay half of the cost <br />to purchase a carload of Georgia clay. He explained that it had to' <br />be purchased in carload lots at a cost of $400.00. He stated that the <br />clay was needed for the new field just West of the school football <br />field. He was advised by the Board that the county had no use for <br />the clay and that donations of this nature are prohibited by law. <br />Mr. Thad Carlton, Attorney, presented the following claim <br />to the Board. Mr. Gould asked that the claim be mailed to the <br />Insurance company. <br />THAD H. Baucom and <br />Wincev Baucom, his wife, against Indian River County, a <br />political subdivision of the State of Florida, for damages <br />sustained by Mr. and Mrs. Baucom as a result of the following: <br />On February 4, 1962, at about 8:56 P.M. o'clock, Mr. <br />Baucom was driving his Pontiac Station Wagon automobile and <br />Mrs. Baucom and others were riding in the automobile with Mr. <br />Baucom, on State Highway 60 (20th Street), in the City of <br />Vero Beach. An automobile owned by Indian River County and <br />being driven and operated by Deputy Sheriff Charles Whiteside <br />at a high and dangerous rate of speed ran into the Baucom <br />automobile with such force that both Mr_. and Mrs. Baucom <br />were severely, painfully and permanently injured. The injury <br />occurred through no fault of either Mr. or Mrs. Baucom. The <br />proximate cause thereof being the careless and reckless <br />operation of the automobile owned by Indian River County. <br />The collision occurred on State Highway 60 (20th Street) <br />approximately at its intersection with Buena Vista (27th Ave.) <br />in the City of Vero Beach.
