Data Format <br /> GIS data can be maintained in a number of formats. The format depends on the type of <br /> software used to create the data and the output format an organization uses to distribute its <br /> information . The combination of Arc Editor and ArcView software recommended for use by <br /> Indian River County offers considerable flexibility. There are only a few data formats that <br /> these applications cannot read ) or import) . <br /> Some formats are easier to use than others . The following is a list of common data formats, <br /> their derivation , their ease of use , and whether they can contain tabular ( attribute) data as <br /> well as geographic data . <br /> Data Formats <br /> Format of choice. Allows multi-user <br /> editing and limitless storage <br /> capacity <br /> ArcGIS data model . Can be <br /> exported as geodatabase, <br /> ArcGIS ArcGIS : coverage, export file , shapefile, <br /> Personal ArClnfo, High Yes or others. Consists of feature <br /> Geodatabase Arc Editor, datasets, feature classes, <br /> ArcView tables, etc . Stored in MS <br /> Access database. Limited <br /> storage capacity <br /> 1. Previous format of choice for <br /> polygonal data, such as tax <br /> parcels , Native Arcinfo <br /> Workstation file format. Is <br /> Arcinfo comprised of many files, <br /> Coverage Arcinfo High Yes I tabular and geographic . All <br /> files must be copied if this type <br /> of file format is to be used. <br /> Utilizes topology. Not <br /> supported by ArcGIS 8.3 <br /> Desktop. <br /> " Format of choice for distribution <br /> of coverages . Contains all of <br /> nfo Export the data in an Arcinfo <br /> Arci <br /> File of of Arcinfo High Yes coverage in one file. This file <br /> format has to be imported but <br /> makes transport of data very <br /> efficient. <br /> Format of choice. Native <br /> ArcView ArcView file format.
