The following is the recommended configuration for notebook computers : <br /> Notebook Computer - Approximate Cost = $3, 570 (e. g. Panasonic Toughbook 29) <br /> • Ruggedized <br /> • Weigh Less than 5 Pounds <br /> • 1 .6 GHz Processor or Greater <br /> 12 Inch or Greater Anti-glare Display <br /> • CD- ROM Drive <br /> • 512 MB RAM or Greater <br /> • 80 GB Hard Drive Space or Greater <br /> • 10/ 100 MBPS Ethernet Card <br /> • Wireless Network Adapter <br /> The Sheriff ' s Department currently utilizes notebook computers in all patrol vehicles ( 130 in <br /> total ) , and the Emergency Services Department and Building Division utilize notebook <br /> computers in the field as well . It is recommended that these departments procure additional <br /> notebook computers as required ; in addition , existing notebook computers should be <br /> upgraded to the aforementioned recommended configuration . The Community <br /> Development , Emergency Services, and Public Works departments should procure <br /> additional mobile computers as needed . The Utility department utilizes eight laptops in the <br /> field - three of them run ArcView9 . 1 ( Locators) and five of them are running Arc Reader 9 .0 <br /> ( Operations Crew Leaders) . <br /> Hand - held Computers <br /> In the long term , it will prove beneficial to provide field staff with additional GIS capabilities <br /> via the use of hand -held computers . The hand-held computers should be able to support <br /> various relevant applications such as ESRI ' s Arc Pad . The following is the recommended <br /> configuration for hand-held computers : <br /> Hand- Held Computers - Approximate cost = $500 <br /> • RAM : 128 MB <br /> • Operating System : <br /> Pocket PC , Pocket PC 2002 , and Pocket PC 2003 (also known as Windows <br /> Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC ) <br /> CPU Chips for Windows Pocket PC <br /> Hitachi SH3 and SH4 <br /> - XScale <br /> StrongARM <br /> - MIPS <br /> - X86 <br /> ' GPS Support <br /> - National Maritime Electronics Association <br /> - Trimble <br /> - Delorme Earthmate <br /> - Rockwell <br /> The Traffic Engineering Section of Public Works currently maintains five handheld palmtop <br /> computers .
