The <br /> benefits of mobile computers are numerous ; however acquisition of this type of hardware <br /> can quickly become cost-prohibitive . There are two viable options for acquisition of mobile <br /> computers by the Department . <br /> - 1 . Basic : Compact Hand- Held <br /> 2 . Intermediate : Small Laptop with 100$ GPS Receiver <br /> ® Basic : Compact Hand-Held <br /> Compact hand-held computers can be purchased and distributed at a relatively small cost . <br /> The typical hand held computer may be purchased as low as $300 dollars . Software <br /> packages such as ESRI ' s ArcPad can be installed and used as a primary mapping <br /> application on these devices . Although this is may be the lowest cost solution there are <br /> some common limitations such as screen size that can be encountered with hand-held <br /> computers . <br /> 21 Intermediate : Small Laptop with 100$ GPS Receiver <br /> Recent advancements in GPS technology have produced relatively low cost location <br /> solutions that can plug-and-play with a standard laptop .
