RESOLUTION NO. 2009-033 <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, <br />IN SUPPORT OF THE DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. <br />HOLIDAY PARADE. <br />WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan signed federal legislation enacting the <br />Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday; and <br />WHEREAS, this year, Dr. King's Holiday will be celebrated on January 19, 2009; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Dr. King's accomplishments are truly worthy of <br />celebration: <br />• In the eleven -year period between 1957 and 1968, Dr. King traveled over six <br />million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever <br />there was injustice, protest, and action. <br />• Dr. King wrote five books as well as numerous articles. <br />• He directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to <br />whom he delivered his famous address, "I Have a Dream" <br />• Dr. King was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963. <br />• At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have <br />received the Nobel Peace Prize <br />WHEREAS, in order to celebrate his accomplishments, the Dr. Martin Luther <br />King Jr. Committee will hold a parade on January 19, 2009; and <br />WHEREAS, the parade will begin at approximately 8:30 A.M. at the intersection <br />of 17th Avenue and 37th Street and proceed west on 37h Street to U.S 1; then north <br />bound on U.S. 1 to Old Dixie Highway; then north on Old Dixie to 45th Street; then <br />turning west on 45th Street to 43rd Avenue; then 43rd Avenue to Gifford Park; and <br />WHEREAS, the parade will conclude at Gifford Park where speeches and <br />additional activities will take place; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY FLORIDA that: <br />1. The Board of County Commissioners supports the Dr. Martin Luther King <br />Jr. Holiday parade. <br />2. The Board proudly authorizes use of any County roads or sidewalks for <br />the parade. <br />1 <br />
