The Board of County Commissioners in and for Indian River County, Florida, met at a the Court House in Vero Beach, on Tuesday, October 2nd 1928 at 10 o'clock .A.M.with the following members of the Board present: John H. Atkin, Chairman; Geo A. Braddock; I. W. McBruce; J. J. P. Hamilton and 0. 0. Relseth. Also present were E3.les Warren, Clerk and J. H. Sutherland, Sheriff. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved by the Board. The Tax Collector filed his month3y report of license collected for the month of ptember 19289 showing $3.00 collected for the State and $3.00 collected for the County. Several citizens appeared before the Board respecting Road B-4 South of Glendale ve. and East of Emerson Ave. It was ordered that the Chairman and County Engineer ook this over and put the road in proper shape for travel. 1rs Bary L. Daniels of Vero Beach was ordered placed on the pauper list to receive 5.00 per month for the next three months while her son, Lawrence Smith, is serving ail sentence. 0 Petitions requesting the respective persons to become candidates and requesting t their names be printed on the official Ballot for the General election for the es•named, and signed by the required number of registered voters, were presented considered and the following persons were ordered placed on said official ballot for the office designated, to -wits - Presidential Electors, Democratic Party. Walters The Certificate of the Republican convention, certifying the nominees of that party ror the offices designated having been received and filed according to law, the said certificate being signed by J. L. IPowers, Chairman and.Bruce Bazler, Secretary, and being ?roperly attested, it was ordered that the following persons, as nominees of the Repub- Lican party be placed on the official ballot for the General Election to be held November Sth 1928, to -wit: - Representative in State Legislature H. T. Seaver Tax Collector. Chester C. Gow Superintendent of Public Instruction. J. L. Powers County Commissioner District No .4 Axel T. Peterson County Commissioner, District No. 5 N Axel Hallstrom 184 County Surveyor: Guilford. D. Young. A petition having been presented to the Board signed by more than 25 qualified electors of the County asking that the name of John H. Sutherland be placed on the ballot at the November election as a candidate for Sheriff. The Board duly considered said petition and it appearing that the Democratic party has nominated a candidate for the office of cfteriff to be voted on at said election, Mr. Sutherland was called before the ,Board and asked to furnish satisfactory evidence to the Board that he had not partici- gated in the affairs of the Democratic party at the primary election held in Indian River County in June 19289 thereupon Mr. Sutherland stated that he could not furnish such evidence in that he had voted in said primary in said County, Whereupon upon motion of 3Commissioner Geo. A. Braddock, seconded by Commissioner J.J.P.Hamilton, and oarried, the ;Board declined to grant the request of said petition and declined to place Mr.Sutherland'l name upon the ballot to be voted upon at the November 1928 election. Such motion was unanimously carried by vote of the Board. It was ordered that the Clerk direct a letter to Mrs Sybil G. Hearne that the matter of pay of expenses in connection with attending needy persons, during the absence of the , County Furse, is a matter between her and Miss Bunkley 9 County Nurse, and that Mi as Bunkley will take the question, up with her. The Tax assessor having completed the tax roll for the year 1928, and having the sane before the Commissioners, together with two copies thereof, as provided by law, and the same having been examined and approved by the Board, the following Tarrant to the Tax Collector was annexed to the said tax roll, to -wit: - THE STAZ OF FLORIDA To Gordon R. Olmstead, Tax Collector of the County of Indian River. You are hereby commanded to collect out of the real and personal property and from each of the persons and corporations named in the annexed roll, the taxes set down in roll, opposite each name, corporation or parcel of land therein described, and in case �' taxes so imposed are not paid, at the time prescribed, by law, you are to collect the 185 same by levy and sale, of the goods and chattels, lands and tenements so assessed, or of the person or corporations so taxed; and all sums collected for the State taxes You are to pay to the State Treasuer at such time as may be required by law, and at the same time you are to pay to the legally qualified depository all sums collected for County taxes, District school taxes, and other special taxes; and you are further required to make all collections on or before the first Monday in .April; on or before the first Monday in July you will make a final report to and settlement with the Comptroller and County Commissioners. Otto Hansen, of Precinct No. 7 appeared before the Board and requested that his name be restored on the registration books of the County, same having been stricken by the Board at a former meeting of said Board. it was ordered that such name be restored to the Registration books. Mr. Davis of Wabasso applied to the Board for the job of Janitor of the Court House. It was ordered that this matter lay over until the regular meeting to be held in No vemb a r.
