Mr. Richard Bogosian, Chairman
Indion River County Commissioners
Courthouse
Vero Beach, Florida
Dear Mr. Bogosian:
On July 27th, a safety committee composed of Mr. Sam McCall, Mr. Sam Joyce,
Mr. Jack Jennings, Mr. George McKenna, Dr. Roy Page, Mr. Ellis Duncan, Mr.
William E. George, Mr.. Thomas W. Valentine, Mr. Jack'Klietz, met.with.me
to study the traffic pattern,.holding lanes and safety conditions and to
make recommendations for the implementation of the safety program at the
new Vero Beach Elementary School. It was the unanimous opinion of the cam-
mittee that a traffic light was needed at 20th -Avenue and 12th Street. ,This
is an extremely dangerous intersection and numerous accidents have occurred
at this location. The committee realizes that it will take some time for
the traffic light to be installed and recommends that 'a four—way stop and,
rumble strips be installed immediately. There will be heavy traffic on
20th Avenue and there was a great concern for students walking and riding
bicycles.on 20th Avenue.
It is recommended that a bridge be constructed across the drainage ditch on
the East side of 20th Avenue approximately 100 feet South of the Vero Beach
Senior High School bus entrance and another bridge to be located South of
14th Street. It is suggested that these bridges be foot bridges (6' bride).
Another bridge should be constructed across the ditch that runs East and ;west
opposite 14th Street similar to the above.. This bridge should lead to a path—
way on tine East side of 20th Avenue as near the bank of the drainage ditch as
practical. It is recon;Prided by the committee that the pedestrian and bicycle
pathway be'constructed.of,marl or shell running along 20th Avenue.
The holding •iane on. 04- with side of 12th Street and North of 16th Avenue
' should be broadened from the intersection at 16th Avenue and 12th Street
East. It is further suggested that the holding lane on the North side of
12th Street be extended to 20th Avenue.
The commiYtee.feels that these changes will result in a much safe situation
for :-students walking and riding bicycles to the new school. It is the hope
of.the committee that the suggestions can be implemented as soon as possible
so that parents and students may become familiar with the traffic pattern and
safety procedures which will be established.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincurely youra,
William H. McClure
