A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY,
FLORIDA, URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE
TO REINSTATE FUNDING IN THE 2004 STATE
BUDGET FOR THE STATE LIBRARY OF FLORIDA
IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE STATE LIBRARY OF
FLORIDA AS A COHESIVE UNIT FOR THE
BENEFIT OF ALL WHO SEEK KNOWLEDGE AND
TRUTH.
WHEREAS, the Governor's proposed 2004 budget, if adopted, as
proposed, will eliminate the State Library of Florida and disperse its
collections; and
WHEREAS, dispersing the historical and unique State Library
Collection to other institutions and agencies will make it difficult for
residents to have free and easy access to information about Florida's j
history, culture, and life in a variety of formats under the guidance of a
qualified, knowledgeable staff; and
WHEREAS, the Indian River County library system has benefited
immensely from the State Library of Florida's provision of enhanced library
services and cost-saving sharing of resources; and
WHEREAS, if increased literacy and better education are the highest
priorities of this Governor's Administration, then dismantling the State
Library of Florida runs contrary to such goals;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF
COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
1 . The foregoing recitations contained in the preamble to this resolution
are hereby adopted and incorporated by reference as if fully set forth
herein.

RESOLUTION. NO. 2003-041
2. The Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida,
strongly urges the Florida Legislature to reinstate funding in the 2004
State Budget for the State Library of Florida including the Division of
Library and Information Services and the Division of Historical
Resources in order to maintain the State Library of Florida as a
cohesive unit for the benefit of all people who seek knowledge and
truth.
3. The Executive Aide to the Board of County Commissioners is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to our local Legislative
Delegation members and to the Florida Association of Counties.
The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner
Ginn and the motion was seconded by Commissioner
Adams and, upon being put to a vote, the vote was as
follows:

At the April 8, 2003 meeting of the Indian River County Commission the Board unanimously
voted to adopt the attached Resolution to reinstate funding in the 2004 state budget for the
State Library of Florida in order to maintain the State Library of Florida as a cohesive unit for
the benefit of all who seek knowledge and truth.
The Indian River County library system has benefited immensely from the State of Florida's
