A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY,
FLORIDA, DECLARING THE FORMAL
RECOGNITION OF THE WEST WABASSO
COMMUNITY NEIGHBORHOOD.
WHEREAS, the purpose of this resolution is to formally recognize
the importance of preserving the existing character of the streetscape and
community referred to as "West Wabasso" which is defined geographically as the
area west of 58th Avenue, east of 66th Avenue, south of the Sebastian city limits,
and north of 82nd Street; and
WHEREAS, the West Wabasso community is an historic African
American residential neighborhood dating back to the 1880s; and
WHEREAS, the site design of a structure in an area is an essential
part of its character. This design includes the streetscape in which the structure
is set, setbacks, driveways, walkways, retaining walls and fences, the way a
structure sits on its lot in relation to other structures and the street, and other
landscaping elements; and
WHEREAS, certain common characteristics of West Wabasso and
its structures define the character of the community and should be considered by
planning officials with regard to proposed developments in the area,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the
Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County by this Resolution
formally recognizes the effort of the West Wabasso community to preserve and
fortify their heritage, historical significance, and the character of the community.

The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner Davis
and seconded by Commissioner Wheeler , and, upon being put to a vote, the
vote was as follows:
