HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-042RESOLUTION NO. 2005- 042 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF THE DOCTRINE OF LOCAL SOURCES FIRST AND IN SUPPORT OF DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLIES. WHEREAS, water is one of Florida's most valuable and essential natural resources; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Indian River County depend on water for drinking, household use, power generation, and industrial purposes; and WHEREAS, water is vital to our County's agricultural industry; and WHEREAS, citizens of this County enjoy our rivers and lakes for recreational purposes and are concerned about the preservation of our environment; and WHEREAS, our County's groundwater is a precious limited resource and it is becoming more apparent that we must reduce our dependence on groundwater to avoid overuse of this resource; and WHEREAS, in order to reduce our dependence on groundwater, it is important to develop alternative water supply sources to offset the growing demand on our natural supply of fresh water and reduce the potential for environmental impact; and WHEREAS, alternative water sources are needed on a state-wide basis to ensure protection of areas with abundant groundwater; and WHEREAS, development of alternative water sources will protect the doctrine of "Local Sources First" so that local municipalities will be able to meet their own needs while also meeting the needs of other areas in the state; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS that: 1. The Board supports legislation that seeks to develop alternative water sources to offset the growing demand on our natural supplies of fresh water. 2. The Board supports legislation that will develop alternative water sources that will reduce the potential for environmental impact. 3. The Board supports legislation that will develop alternative water sources on a state- wide level so that areas of abundant groundwater resources will be protected and the doctrine of "Local Sources First" will be preserved. 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2005- 042 The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Davis and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Wheel er , and, upon being put to a vote, the vote was as follows: Chairman Thomas S.
