HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-044RESOLUTION NO. 2012= 044 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE USE OF FLORIDA NATIVE WILDFLOWERS IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the natural beauty of native wildflowers in Indian River County is enjoyed by everyone, attracts guests to our county, benefits commerce, and promotes environmental health and well-being; and WHEREAS, the promotion and enjoyment of native wildflowers is a matter upon which all county and community leaders can unite for the benefit of everyone; and WHEREAS, many beautiful species of native wildflowers, including Coreopsis, which is the Florida State Wildflower and is depicted on the State Wildflower license tag, are already prominently displayed along many of the state and county roadways in Indian River County; and WHEREAS, promoting and increasing the visibility of native wildflowers in Indian River County is consistent with the vision of the Comprehensive Plan, and the goals of many individuals, businesses and community-based organizations; and WHEREAS, the presence of native wildflowers is essential to the vitality of native pollinator species necessary for productive and profitable farms and forests; and WHEREAS, in the spring of 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon named this beautiful place La Florida, Land of Flowers, because of the wealth of native wildflowers; and WHEREAS, in the year 2013, native wildflowers will be a prominent icon of Florida's and Indian River County's quincentennial celebration of Spain and Florida, and WHEREAS, it is desirable and attainable to experience the beauty of many more native wildflowers by reducing the frequency and extent of roadside mowing, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida, does hereby commit and encourage others to commit to the conservation of roadside native wildflowers on state and county roadways, and does hereby instruct County staff to partner with the Florida Department of Transportation and adjoining property owners to plan and implement roadside management practices that will increase the visibility and enjoyment of Florida native wildflowers. 1 RESOLUTION NO.2012- 044 The foregoing resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Davis and said motion was seconded by Commissioner Solari and, upon being put to a vote, the vote was, as follows: Chairman Gary C.
