HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-0131/26/95(re8o\motorvot)Vk RESOLUTION NO. 95-13 A RIEOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMISSIONERS 01 INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO THE UNITED STATED CONGR212, URGING REPEAL OF TNR NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION ACT (POPULARLY KNOWN AE THE 11310TOEt. VOTBR" LAM), WHEREAS, because of new federal and state regulations incident to the passage of the National Voter Registration Act, starting January 1, 1995, people can register to vote by mail without having to provide identification and proof of citizenship; WR R=AE, local election officials will not be able to determine if someone is registered elsewhere, if the person is a citizen, or even whether the person exists; MHBREA8, the number of fraudulent signatures on constitutional amendment petitions will increase because there in nothing to stop signature collectors from collecting voter registration forme, registering a fictitious name, and signing the petitions; MBEREAS, in a close election if a candidate claims fraud has been committed, it will be nearly impossible to prove; and MNEREAS, this law is going to completely change voter registration in the United States and has the potential of affecting election results; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD Or COUNTY COMM1138IONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: 1. The Board strongly urges the Congress of the United States to act promptly to correct these provisions of the National Voter Registration Act; 2. A copy of this resolution be provided to Florida Senator Scott and members of the legislative delegation for Indian River County and to the National Association of Counties. The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Bird, and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Tippin, and, upon being put to a vote, the vote was as follows: Chairman Kenneth R.
