HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-022Resolution No. 92- 22 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORTING THE SURFACE WATER IMPROVEMENT AND MANAGEMENT (SWIM) PROGRAM. WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature enacted the Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act in 1987 which directed the water management districts, state agencies and local governments to implement plans for improvement and management of the state's priority surface water bodies; and WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon was declared a SWIM priority water body; and WHEREAS, a management plan for the Lagoon was adopted in September 1989; and WHEREAS, a portion of the Indian River Lagoon watershed lies within the boundaries of Indian River County and significantly contributes to the aesthetic, ecological and economic values of our community; and WHEREAS, SWIM funded projects have provided assistance to Indian River County through the initiation of major programs in the areas of water quality monitoring; mapping of seagrass, sediments, land use, and stormwater outfalls; reconnecting impounded marshes to the Lagoon; correcting failed septic and stormwater systems; providing resource planning tools; and establishing public awareness and education activities; and WHEREAS, the continued funding of the SWIM program and the establishment of a permanent funding source will result in the successful continuation and completion of projects designed to preserve and restore the state's valuable surface waters such as the Indian River Lagoon system; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners respectfully requests that the legislature continue the SWIM program and establish a permanent funding source for this most worthwhile endeavor.
