I; WHEREAS ,,the Fort Pierce Port Authority has established
4P oxine'Port in Fart 'Pierce, 'Florida, which said Port constitutes
the Marine Port for service not only of St. Lucie County, in whiohl
it is located, but also in Indian River County adjoining; and,

WHERW, the Board „of County Commissioners of Indian

'`River County is vitally interested in the growth and development i

of said Port for the purpose of obtaining adequate terminal
''facilities; and,
WHEREAS, said Port Authority has requested the Maritime
;'Administration to make an economic survey or study of said Port;
Now, therefore,
Big IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Indian River County, Florida, that this Hoard does herewith roa-
pectfully request the Honorable Spessard L. Holland and the
Honorable George Smathers, United States Senators, and the
Honorable Dwight L. Rogers, Member of Congress, to use their best E
.efforts and the facilities of their offices to secure the services;
of the Maritime Administration to make an economic survey or
study of the Port of Fort Pierce at the earliest possible date.
BE, IT FUW. HER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
Resolution be forwarded forthwith to the Honorable Speesard L.
Holland, the Honorable George Smathers, and the Honorable Dwight
L. Rogers.

Reference is made to your letter, file reference R & H,
dated July 12, 1954, and our reply, file number L24-2:750, dated
July 19, 1954, relative to Maritime participation In the conduct
of an economic survey as set forth in Resolutions a4optod by the
CI-ty Commission of the City of Fort pierce, Florida, and the Board
of Cmunissioners of the Port Pierce Port Authority.
Representatives of` the Maritime Administration have conferred
with membera of the Board of Cwmisuioners of the Fort Pierce
Port Authority and have reached mutual agreement as to desired
action. Opecifica.11y, the Maritime Administration will conduct
an investigation of limited scope Intended to determine the
advisability of further study, by the Port Authority, to develop
the flow of commerce throup-h Fort Pierce Harbor.
The subject survey will be conducted by Maritime Administration
staff members who will contact Fort Pierce officials with
regard to details.

The Fort Pierce, Florida, Port Authority has adopted an
aggressive policy of port development requiring a aisable
loan on a self—liquidating basis. Taxpayers oC that area
already have invested $2 million dollars and contomplate
ayonding another million dollars in eVaudinj, this port.
The Federal Government also time invostod nearly a million
dollars in maintaining the port.
To continue davoloj=snt of this project in an orderly way,
the Port Authority badly noods an economic study or Survey
at an early date by the Maritime) Administration. lie enclose
a Resolution rrom the Port Authority and strongly urea your
favorable consideration.
This Port played a tremendous role last aeadon exportin.-
Florida Citrus overseas, With thn dentruotive frease in
Spain, Florida was call -d on to furnish citrus for Holland,
France and many other Furopo= countries, Jacksonville and
Fort Pierce worn our only ports equipped to handle refri kersted
shipments. Fort Pierce hent1led a large portion of Vie 2:A
million bo)ais of Florida citrus exported to European markets.
