HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-067RESOLUTION NO. 89-67 A RESOLUTION OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA ENCOURAGING ADOPTION OF A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO PROHIBIT THE DESECRATION OF THE AMERICAN FLAG. WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled that It is not against the Constitution of the United States for an individual to burn an American flag when such burning Is part of that Individual's exercise of ttfe right of free speech protected by the First Amendment; and WHEREAS, the Supreme Court made this ruling on only a five -to -four majority, which Is an Indication of, how closely divided the court was; and WHEREAS, Indian River County believes that desecration of the American flag Is an abominable act and should be unworthy of Constitutional protection; and WHEREAS, Indian River County believes that the United States Constitution should be amended to prohibit such flag desecration, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board respectfully requests the Florida Legislature to Initiate the procedures necessary to amend the United States Constitution to prohibit desecration of the American flag. The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Bird • and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Eggert and, upon being -put to a vote, the vote was as follows: Chairman Gary C. Wheeler Aye Vice -Chairman Carolyn K. Eggert Aye Commissioner Richard N. Bird Aye Commissioner Don C. Scurlock, Jr. Aye Commissioner Margaret C. Bowman Aye The Chairman thereupon declared the resolution duly passed and adopted this 27th day of June, 1989.
