RESOLUTION NO. 83-19
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, URGING THE
LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO ADOPT
LEGISLATION IMPOSING A LICENSE FEE FOR GILL
NET FISHING IN THE INDIAN RIVER, THE SEBASTIAN
RIVER AND INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY.
WHEREAS, the Indian River is a natural resource that
provides a livelihood for many fishermen and natural habitat for
sports fishermen, and
WHEREAS, a progressive resource management program for
the river is in the best interest of all the citizens of Indian
River County and all those who come .in contact with the river by
virtue of their occupation or hobbies, and
WHEREAS, both the sports fishermen and commercial
fishermen of Indian River County believe that the misuse of gill
nets in the rivers contribute to the disintegration of this
valuable resource and the disruption of the balance of nature,
and
WHEREAS, the imposition oe a reasonable gill net
licensing program can serve as an edrncational tool to stem the
misuse of such nets thereby preventing abuses, and
WHEREAS, funds derived from the licensing program could
be best utilized enhancing law enforcement efforts in the rivers,
further protecting this delicate resource.
NOW, THEREFORE, HE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that.
1. The Board of County Commissioners of Indian River
County, Florida supports the efforts of the commercial and sports
fishermen of Indian River County in preservation of the Indian
River, the Sebastian River and Intracoastal Waterway, and
2. The legislature of the State of Florida is urged to
adopt a reasonable gill. net licensing and education program for
commercial and sports fishermen in the Indian River, the Sebastian
River. and Intracoastal Waterway.
The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner
Lyons who moved its adoption. The motion was seconded by
Commissioner Scurlock and, upon being put to a vote, the

Vice -Chairman Don C. Scurlock, Jr. - Aye
Commissioner Patrick B. Lyons - Aye
Commissioner William C. Wodtke, Jr. - Aye
The Chairman thereupon declared the resolution duly
passed and adopted this 2nd day of March, 1983.
