AUGUST 308 1949a The Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County met at the City Hall in Vero Beach, Florida' at 8:00 P. M., Tuesday' .August 30, 1949, in special meeting with the following members present: W. C. Graves, Jr., Chairman; Aubrey L. Waddell, Tom N. Stewart.. Absent: H. C. Watts. Also present were Charles A. Mitchell, Attorney; E. E. Carter, Road and Bridge Superintendent, and Douglas Baker, Clerk. This meeting was held with members and/or representatives of the following political organizations, subdivision and/k*m=, to -wit: City of Vero Beach' Board of Public Instruction' American Red Cross, Vero Beach.Chamber of Commerce, South and Central Florida Flood Control District' and Fellsmere Sugar Producers Association. RED CROSS - As of August 31, 19+9 250 applications for help on damaged private homes $ 152000 • 159000 $3,4539500 * Agriculture - based on 1,000,000 boxes of fruit ( approximately half of total crop) on ground and replanting pperations in vege&ables. ** Not reflected,in Item 5• to -wits - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RFS OLUT I ON Commissioner Stewart introduced the following Resolution and moved its adoption, WHEREAS, Indian River County, and the mdnicipalities therein, in common with a considerable area of the State of Florida, have suffered a major disaster by reason of the hurricane which occurred in such area on August 26 and 270 1949,and which disaster is evidenced in part by an estimate of the damage resulting from such hurricane hereto attached and made a part of this resolution; and, WHEREAS, the principal and basic industry of this area is the growing, packing and processing of citrus fruit and as a result of such hurricane, and through absolute necessity, employers have been compelled to discontinue their customary and normal operations in the groves, fields.and packing houses and as a'result a very considerable number of citizens of this County are without employment; and WHEREAS, regular employment for such persons is necessary in order that they may provide the actual necessity of life for themselves and their families and it is essential that immediate employment be provided for them; and, AREAS, funds are necessary for the repair of properties, for the growing of crops and for similar purposes; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida, that it does herewith request Governor Fuller Warren to ask the President of the United States for disaster relief in the way of grants to the counties, Boards of Public Instruction, cities and drainage districts in said area in order that they may immediately repair storm damage and give employment particularly to what is known as "common labor"„ and further that provision may be made for loans for growers of crops. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Honorable Alex MacWilliam, as Chairman, and E. G. Thatcher, as Secretary, of Indian River County Citizens Committee for Disaster Relief connect- ed with the State and Federal Governments, to be requested to transmit copies of this Resolution to Governor Warren and to the Members of Congress representing this area. On motion of Commissioner Waddell, seconded by Commissioner Stewart and carried, the Board agreed to provide a sum not to exceed $2500 as a hurricane disaster emergency fund when, as and if needed. Said sum to be paid from the Road and Bridge Fund of Indian River County. There being no further business on motion made, seconded and carried, the Board then ad j ourned. 0 ATTEST:
